I have added curved edges and a matte finish on 350gsm card. I made changes to the front which included taking away the program icons and adding my location along with symbols for the email, phone and location. I also adjusted the text sizes between my industry title and contact information. On the reverse side I have created a range of new hand illustrated icons to copy across the same style of pattern I created for my UCC Coffee project, which I will be exhibiting for my degree show. I have ordered 50 business cards which should be enough for my degree show.
Business Cards

However I did not keep them updated which has left them go unnoticed. My plan is to revisit each of these after my final submission and make a real chance for myself to get noticed within the industry. I want to set up my own Behance portfolio as I can see and get feedback from other creatives super easy. I have my own website which has my portfolio stuff on which I will also update to act as a landing page. I feel my custom URL will be more memorable than a default set URL from behance for instance, making it easier for people to remember me. So, 1 year later and I am once again re-imaging myself as a near-graduate designer.
I have kept the front facing card clean and have tried to not overload it with information. I feel the information anyone would need is on there and so I do not need to list every site I am attached to. It starts with a friendly typeface with smooth curves which says I’m Ben – pretty straightforward, it then goes on to turn into a URL address with a simple speech bubble. It states my sector, a few of the programs I am familiar with which are the key programs to most simple design jobs. Next is my email, phone number and behance url for a recognisable portfolio site. As for the back of the card, I did not have any more information I felt was necessary and so I included a friendly message to the person I hand the card to, or to whomever picks my business card up.
This vibrant colour contrast is very hard to miss and having a simple message such as this being handed to you after a first encounter personally is a nice touch. The colours used throughout are pale palette tones which complement each other. I will get feedback on these before sending them off for printing in the next few days so they arrive in time for my exhibition.
Self Promotion Business Cards

I quickly put a business card together earlier and printed it onto card, again I have kept the same colour theme constant throughout. On the back of the card there are 3 icons showing a cup, pen and light bulb. These represent a light-hearted transition from coffee > brain-storming > ideas. The original plan was to have the back of the card in colour and the icons white to contrast against the front. However I have better things to splash my ink on and so I swapped this around and made the icons have colour instead. I think this minimalistic approach still has a lasting impression on the viewer.
Mind Your Own Business Review

I collaborated within a group of 4 members and made some great friends from it. We worked together to create a marketing product to sell to other students which would be potential customers outside of university. We brain stormed and combined all of our ideas to create an ideal product. We decided to opt for xmas cards as the market would be just before christmas. This was the perfect opportunity to take advantage of the holiday period. We each created a few designs each and then reviewed them all and selected the best marketing designs. We wanted these cards to stand out from its competitors and so we wanted to create traditional cards using the machinery available to us within university. We letter pressed greeting messages within the cards and screen printed each of our designs onto the cards. Our material was carefully sourced from online, I was in charge of the finance and so I researched quality card for money and found packs of 100 A4 sheets at 300GSM which meant that our screen printing wouldn’t bleed and thus keeping our designs crisp and to a high quality.
We wanted our product to become more than just a card, and so after some thought and discussion we adapted our product to be customised through colouring. We bought a large amount of colouring pencils and created our own schematic box with our logo and message on before putting the packaging together. Our packaging was made with high accuracy and left no room for error after a lot of digital scrutiny before production as we did not want to waste money on misprints.
We packaged our cards within a polythene bag and added an additional ribbon with our brand logo with its personal message to the customer thanking them of their service. We successfully sold all of our products and made a 300% return which we felt proved our product was well-suited for our target audience. After the market we went straight to work and focused on getting our Business plan together for our Pitch in the coming weeks. The Pitch came around quickly and despite being nervous I felt that together we did a fantastic pitch and clearly explained our product. The feedback confirmed this and they commented on the group answering their set-questions in the pitch before they had a chance to ask us at the end.
After Christmas we regrouped and received our feedback for the first half of Field. We received over 80% giving us a clear first which has inspired me to think about creating a small business after university, I would really like to manage my own business and feel that I am financially knowledgable enough to resource materials and maintain a cash flow. From this project I have seen how easy it is to create a product and market yourself from just £100 with the resources available to me right now.
The Big Day: Xmas Market Sales Event

We were based within the heart space in the Art and Design Building. Earlier that week we had made a selection of posters and put them up on notice boards around the university to reach a wider audience. During the day many people took an interest in our idea and even said if they had children or youngsters they knew they would have bought our product as it was a fun and engaging idea. The customers that bought from us were able to customise their card bundles from the selection available. As we has a pre-sale the week before, we had already made most of our money back and we waited for our pre-orders to be collected from our stall during the final market day. I really enjoyed working within the business group and I felt that our team collaborated very well and each had an input on our final product. We also made a Facebook page for our business product which gained followers quickly and widened our community. I feel this experience has helped me develop my attitude to a business start-up and i am now considering my own small business when I leave university. I loved working with screen printing and thought it was a fantastic way to produce handcrafted graphics to give it a more traditional look. This is turn gives it a high materialistic quality. We made our money back to cover the costs of production and made a small profit which we split equally between the members of our team.

So the last week has been focused on finishing our product to the highest standard. We have completed our manufacturing and the packaging has a few minor adjustments which will be added on Monday morning to ensure it is ready for sales on Tuesday. At the same time our team has started the business plan which will need to be printed and spiral bound for Thursdays pitch to the panel.
On Thursday we went over the typical questions that will be asked by the panel and how to plan our responses carefully.

Pre-Sale event in Management Building

We were their from 10-2 and felt it was a great experience to have before our official stall on the 16th December at the CSAD building. Today we had to make some quick adjustments to our plan as screen-printing went haywire last night meaning that we could not create our final cards and so instead we created digitally printed cards to display at our stall while we took pre-orders for the 16th. To attract customers we lowered our price to those who pre-ordered by 25% to encourage them to buy now rather than later, this gave us a rough estimate of how much we can expect to create, which in turn saves us time and money with any extra cards. We started the stall by interacting with the cards ourselves, cutting and colouring in our designs for display. Students came over to see what we were doing and some were watching from the floors above. Once we completed a small sample we put them on display next to the cards as an example.
As expected, the target market did not suit our location as we were surrounded by students not children. However the tutors and a few students bought the bundled cards and as an incentive we gave them each a free candy cane for pre-ordering. What surprised me was that a student and a tutor came to us after their friends told them about our items. I felt the pre-sale went very well even though the market audience was not really suitable. At 2pm we packed up and headed over to the print studio to put a fresh coat on our screen-print ready for friday/early next weeks print session. We are hoping to have thicker card by the end of the week and also ribbon to secure our bundles together and candy cane packages. What would also be interesting is to create a set of new designs for a student target audience to sell on the 16th as this will give us a better chance at connecting to our peers and maximise revenue. Our envelopes are expected Monday-Wednesday next week and so we can not secure the packages just yet.
Next on the list is to make a start on the Business plan which is up to 3000words and has to be completed within the next 2 weeks. We also need to collect any outstanding payments for the pre-order which were made online through our Facebook page, this will be done by the end of the week.
Mind Your Own Business; Session 5

I finished the business cards which also double up as receipts. At the library we had a few issues with the printing due to our designs being resized by the printer settings which made us print more copies off which could of been avoided. However the cost of this was nothing major and has all been noted in the finance section of our business for review later. When I got home I found that the candy canes, cello card bags and pencils had arrived on time which meant that we were ready to start packaging our product on Tuesday. This boosted our excitement to move on and create our cards ready to be sold on Wednesdays pre-sale. We stayed in uni till 5 preparing the screen printing equipment for Tuesdays session.
On Tuesday we came in for 10 and had a presentation from a guest speaker called Sarah Mccall from ONGL Design and Make, she was a student at Cardiff met until 2009. She started up her own studio after working for other businesses.
Go Wales Freelancer Academy helped her out by providing a course on enterprise and jargon.
Top tips:

Then at 2pm we had a talk from Neil Cocker, owner of an online company called DizzyJam. He was a great guest speaker and told us about his experience of running a company and his thoughts on revenue margin in comparison to size of company which made me think differently about scale of a company as a small-time company could be making the same profit as a multi-million pound company which has high production costs. After the presentation we split the team in half, the girls went to the screen printing room to work on the stencil for print while me and Barbra went to the library to print off posters and finance receipts. When the group met back later on we discovered that the screen-printing was over exposed and so the lines were not correctly set. This meant we had to wash out the stencil and start again. We worked into the evening and past 5pm which risked us being kicked out by security, at 7pm we scrambled to our backup plan of digitally creating our products for the display of Wednesdays pre-sale. We decided this was the safest option and it would at least give us something to show our customers what they would be buying. We printed 2 copies of each of our designs and a selection of business cards which we cut out using the guillotine. We began to package our cello bags with our prototype cards, pencils and candy canes ready for Wednesday morning.
Looking at the work of Lorraine Loots

She came up with the idea of painting a small image per day which related to something that she did, or inspired her. She posted these pictures to her blog and soon she had a close community which followed her updates. Many tried to suggest what she could paint next but Lorraine did not want to be told what to draw and instead wanted to take inspiration from her surroundings. I think these paintings are unique and a very qwerky way of card making. I will continue to research marketing projects which our team can create and research material costs and cost of using equipment within university.
