Student Set Project: Tutorial with David

I had my first group tutorial today with David to discuss which brief I have decided to work on. I had a lot of notes scribbled down over many pages as I have had a lot of motivation towards this project as it is my final chance to show off my ability. I gave a run down of what my brief was, what I wanted to produce and what user functionality that included. David seemed pleased with my progress and gave me great advice and suggestions. For next Thursday, I should consider how I can make my concept app & physical content different from its competitors and of that already on the market. I had already done small research on this and found many online/ mobile apps are mortgage calculators and none appear to have the same concept as mine giving this project originality which I think will be a great advantage if I can submit it as part of the HSBC competition.

Next I was made aware of the narrative of this project, the brief clearly asks for a warm underlying humanistic feel and UX. This will be created through soft-toned personal messages and I have now considered animation or illustrations between completed checklists/ sections of the mobile application. This will engage and intrigue the user of its friendly, supportive content, making the app a real winner in contrast to the disconnected, low-quality mortgage calculators already on the market. To further research into app narrative I was suggested to look at other apps that specialise in Fashion for instance, another example could be mobile games and how they engage the user through the story. I will also research into typefaces to portray a modern, smart – yet friendly typeface.

As I have already jumped the gun and started sketching out and designing layout mockups on illustrator, I will now continue a more thorough research into how the app will be interacted and its functionality. By understanding and creating a strong connection between each of my concept ideas I will be able to create a more simple, responsive and beautiful user interface. I will also research into text hierarchy which is one of my favourite parts about typography. I am also considering about implementing sound into the app to reinforce completed decisions made by the user, these could be coins clinking, a locking mechanism or a simple swoosh to bring abstractionism and imagery of the users end result from using this application and process.

In regards to the time period I have to complete this project as best to my ability, I feel I can sufficiently create smart, efficient mockups ready for a presumed final presentation. I will keep a research and development file along side my progress to reflect on my decisions and final journey.

D&AD Brief Presentation and Workshop

D&AD are a not for profit company. Any profit goes into the D&AD Foundation and New Blood program which help the next generation get the most out of their creative industry. The foundation itself help promote diversity an stimulates a more sustainable future.

There are three sections to D&AD, the awards, festival and academy.

The festival is a great way to meet people from the industry, there are big named judges and there is the chance for a ceremony to look and evaluate your creativity. If you are lucky enough to win one of their awards, D&AD will do their best to remain in contact with you and will assist you with interviews and mentor you as a creative to help you progress further in your chosen industry.

We looked at some of the available briefs given to us last Monday, firstly:

Monotype

Expressive communication through typography. I thought this would be relevant in response to the recent events in Paris and other countries where ISIS have caused terrorist activities. A possible approach would look at or express the negative behaviour from the minority towards muslims and other religions as a cause of terrorist behaviour from extremists groups who use religion as a fake front for their actions. However, this is a sensitive topic and can cause controversy over many ethic groups. This can also be a great way to express attitudes towards the Syrian Refugees whom are being housed within the UK. Positive expression and awareness could have beneficial factors to help and support the refugees and aid their settlement into the community.

The judging is completely anonymous and so if you have won an award it truly is because of your creative ability.

Criteria

  • Does it have a great creative idea?
  • Is it well executed
  • Is it on the brief
  • The idea is king – “Bake the idea before you ice the cake.” without an idea your designs fall flat and unrefined.
  • “A strong idea will always beat something that looks nice.”
  • Be bold
  • Treat technology with caution, with apps – what is the core insight, how does it connect people to the situation or task at hand?
  • Focus on the brief first not the technology you want to use
  • Do more than the brief

After our lecture, we had workshop to analysis the D&AD’s own brief given to us. We were asked to look through the brief and highlight any important words and sentences that we felt structured the brief. We were asked to choose 16 words from the brief, then from this 8 words. In the end we ended up with 2 very important words which we felt best explained the brief.

In pairs we used these 2 words to create insights and an idea to pitch to the year group.

Our words were Courage and Industry

Our insights were Embrace Change & Comfort Zones

Here is our creative team’s concept:

C R E A T E H E R E

“A creative matching service to encourage long-lasting relationships  between old and young professionals alike”

We drew on dating sites such as match.com, POF (Plenty of Fish) and Tinder to produce a creative-industry equivalent service where young and old professionals can meet and exchange experiences and tips with other local creatives. Refinements such as age range, gender, distance, experience in years and even a chosen industry.

For example

Simon (23) who is currently in his second year of Product Design uses the service to find a creative between the ages of (25-35) in Graphic Design with 3 years of professional experience to improve his industry networking and ask for guidance and feedback on any recent projects.

Application:

We felt that a Tinder-styled app that could display a short portfolio of one creative’s ability where another creative could swipe to match with potential networking associate, would be appropriate and could encourage the user to match based on the creatives work, not personal appearance. This procedure would maintain professionalism throughout and help creatives to find and discover local ability easily and efficiently.

From this quick exercise I feel our creative team worked well on the apps potential and I feel it would be a great project to experiment with during our spare time. Submission is March 2016 and so it is possible to get our concept into practice in time for submission.

Further note

  • “All the best ideas had a great insight” – Insight is import as it’s how a recipiant can relate and connect to your solution and outcome  “All the best ideas had a great insight”
  • Share your ideas, don’t keep them to yourself, to get peoples views
  • Be original – Don’t rush into your first idea, usually others will have thought of it.

Penguin Brief: Comparison of Book Covers

A-Clockwork-OrangeA-Clockwork-Orange-2

Here is my comparison between my two book covers for ‘A Clockwork Orange – Anthony Burgess’, which had a formal crit today with Ray. My first book cover (orange themed – with protagonist holding knife) had a flat design and made use of pale colours. This gave off a friendly vibe however the audience is quickly made aware of the hidden violence through the depiction of a man holding a knife behind his back. From my feedback I have been made aware of the anatomy of my character being unnatural which has left the mans arm higher than needed. To resolve this before submission I will take photos of a model holding a knife to illustrate with better accuracy and structure. I have also been suggested to reposition the book title away from the characters head as this is unneeded and to complicated. Although the same title used in my second book cover (typewriter and broken glass) was seen as effective and suitable for that specific design. For my second book cover I really enjoyed experimenting with hand illustrations and feel I will further explore the possibilities of this design method in many other projects to help build my portfolio. My tutor suggested that the broken glass was not illustrated similarly to the typewriter however I used the same process, this could be because the glass plays with transparency which may cause contrast to the flat colours of the typewriter. From my crit I was also made aware of the gap between the title and the bleed marks which makes it unnatural to the eye. I was suggested that the book title could be swapped with the review from Time, this would also give the title typographical hierarchy

Penguin Brief: Book Cover 2 – Digital Layout

Screen Shot 2015-11-13 at 17.22.45

My finished second book cover (above). I decided to go keep the main background colour red with milk spillage  on the back page, this felt more natural on the eyes and steered away from the use of orange overused by many famous designs of this book.

Here are my other two similar designs, I have manipulated the background by revealing the iconic orange which in turn creates a wave separation between the blood and milk. This could be a metaphor for the milk, being drugged, washing into the violence through the blood.

Subject review with Paul Atkins

Looked at penguin brief and persuasion project and discussed ways to improve the issues of typography within my work. Firstly, my persuasion project was considered a solid idea and it was well suited for my intentions. However there are some minor issues with layout such as the name ‘ShelterCard’ and its positioning on the card. The colour is also a problem as it does not contract well with the background. To resolve this I will experiment with the stroke of ‘Shelter’ and select a suitable colour. I will also play with the positioning of the name and possibly resize it to sit in the corner of the card much like a debit card. This in turn will open up the imagery and make it more appealing. I am thinking about taking my own imagery for the selected backgrounds and using a white backdrop as to not disrupt the foreground information.

My Penguin project feedback was helpful as I was given layout advice too. For Carrie’s War, I need to think about decreasing the image size to make the use of white space and to revisit the typography. It was suggested that I move ‘War’ over to the left and increase the scale of the title on the spine due to the hierarchy of typography faults. I also need to bring in the columns on the back page > < as they are to close to the bleed lines. For Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit, I need to move title down and change all the text to white to contract against the orange. Possibly flipping the image and rescaling the objects I can clear the obstruction area where the title can now be placed.

My future plans for my persuasion project is to create window stickers to highlight participating stores for my Shelter Card concept. I will also consider creating a website mockup for advice/ info/ donations/ list of shops & restaurants for my concept.

Dark Patterns

– naughty tricks designers use to make the audience do something

– sites like Ryanair, tricky unsubscribing from newsletters or ‘free trial memberships’

– advertisement tricks, positioning, text, icons. fake ‘download’ buttons on download sites. facebook: ‘what happened next is unbelievable!!’

– these trick older generations, but what will be phased in to trick us as we get older? now started blending in advertisements as instagram posts, fb newsfeed posts, yt videos etc. They force themselves within our direction of attention.

Penguin Submit workshop

Looking at the Printer marks, spine folds and bleed marks within the amended template for the

Penguin Brief.

A never-ending reminded – the bleed mark is a fail safe, normally 3mm however in this case it is 5mm.

Never alter the copy or fix efforts. Tell the client of any mistakes that you find and ask for an updated cover copy so any changes made are recorded. Always copy and paste the data as this prevents any typos and language errors made by you, the designer.

Crimes against typography

Pixilation: Stretched, compressed in Photoshop. Don’t do type in Photoshop!

Justified left, ragged right.

Rivers, Justifying text – stretching it across paragraph.

Incorrect leading, to close or to far away.

-Kerning – Spacing between letters. Tracking – spacing between words-

Use smart quotes not hatch markings make sure ” ” hangs outside the paragraph margin so type looks natural.

What colour on colour to use. Example, red on blue, green, red and grey.

Using to many fonts, different weights are fine as long as they are from the same type family.

Hierarcy.

Don’t do what ammeters can do. Drop shadowing and embossing text.

Don’t use bad typefaces.

Synamic swiss grid.

My Kinetic Typography Experimentation

https://vimeo.com/94776925

We were given the brief of making a Kinetic Typography video using After Effects. The purpose of this was to express our ability with the software and improve our skills with some of the tools available. I used graphics which I created on Illustrator and Photoshop and imported them into the video. This allowed me to create PNG files such as the dirty plates and road signs. I really enjoy creating Motion Graphics and will continue to experiment with this style for future projects.
