The Big Idea: Impact of Dissertation

The last few weeks have been busy with the completion of my dissertation, which in turn has had an impact on my TBI project. After completing my thesis I now have a few days to really focus on my project. I want to look at the editorial environment within social media to implement awareness content on our perception of social media and how we behave. I am really interested in how we act online and feel it would be a great thing to research and work on, as the internet is dramatically becoming a part of our everyday activity. From my research already I have learnt the issues social media brings such as smiling depression to our perceived ideology of the perfect lifestyle which is influenced by famous figures or simply our social media friends.

My direction and purpose of this project is to raise awareness to those who use social media activity about the way they do so. This could be done through interactive content/ advertisement. It could possibly reflect their own behaviour through a light-humoured cartoon style, with a deeper awareness which will make the target audience reflect. A possible direction could be that the user clicks through the daily activities a said character does which is a standard behaviour of an active social generation such as myself. The user would interactive with these still images or gif animations to extend the story. Between each transition there could be an informative note which raises the awareness of the dangers or issues caused by doing a said activity (such as checking a smart device at night, this can disrupt sleeping patterns which has a wider affect on a persons body such as insomnia, memory fatigue or anxiety) I really don’t want this project to become a metal health awareness campaign because that is not the case, instead I want to make the user aware of their ‘looping’ styled behaviour and try and influence a fresh approach to the way people use social media in an attempt to bring a healthy balance between their social life and actual lifestyle. I could possibly link this to the creative industry and how this can affect their creativity by limiting their imagination and idea generation.

The Big Idea: Tutorial

I had a short tutorial with my tutor today to discuss possible direction. I discussed my concept and how I could target my desired audience and what I wanted to achieve from this. We talked about augmented reality and how companies such as Pepsi have implemented their advertisement into everyday situations.

All of us know bus stops have generalised advertisement posters on the sides for us to see while we wait for a bus, however more recently we are ignoring many ways of traditional advertisement which I discussed in my dissertation. Pepsi have taken a fresh approach to this by implementing augmented reality which uses a live feed of a pavement behind the bus-stop to turn the side into a ‘window’ where the audience can see others passing by and the same goes for the traffic. However, at different moments the screen introduces bizarre scenarios such as a UFO attack, meteor crash and even escaped animals running towards the bus stop. At a first glance the audience are drawn to the sudden movement from the sky or path which is moving towards them. After the audience is aware that the animation is projected onto the screen it transitions to a pepsi advertisement. This approach to grasping the target audience proved very affective with many of those who witnessed the projections, smiling and enjoying themselves.

The Big Idea: Extended Research

While doing some research on our perception of social media, I came across these hard-hitting short films which perfectly capsulate what I would like to make others aware of. It is so easy to create a different lifestyle online to ‘fit’ into societies perception of an ideal lifestyle. Where in fact, many are spending so much time on social media their actual lifestyle is affected. I’ve seen many profiles where people strike for attention, followers and likes mean everything which is bizarre as social media is relatively new, given the public interest of Facebook in 2005 and Youtube later that year.

These videos capture the emotional distress on both parties through social media and how they comfort themselves through the interest of others ‘liking’ their activity. ‘What’s on your mind?’ has a slightly dark humour to it as he goes out of his way to make his life seem great, but in the process his emotional level is shown to affect his health as he turns to alcohol. At the end, he finally opens up with his life – soon to be blocked by others because of his negative approach. I have been guilty of doing this as there are a few people I have know to only post negative things on social media all day, every day. But seeing the bigger picture and their life behind the screen does have an impact on the way I think about those affected. I would really like to create a more light-humoured approach to the subject of social perception and nudge others to realise that they are falling into the same trap of trying to be similar to other people, which in turn may make them feel more alone or ‘unsociable’.

*updated to add ‘a social life’

Dissertation PDP

Towards the end of second year, dissertation became of significant importance and initially I was intimidated by the idea of writing a 10,000 word thesis on anything that interested me. I had weekly seminars to help prepare research and direction into a chosen topic. From first year, I quickly took interest in modern technology and after attending one of the available constellations with Clive, the seminars looked at what made an object a tool or artefact. This was one of my first experiences of looking at the psychology of technology and it really sparked an interest which influenced later essays, and led me to learn about the Internet of Things during a field module in second year. The constellation seminars during second year highlighted past issues of previous student dissertations and gave me tips on what to avoid and include within my own dissertation research and helped me to decide on a topic which was relevant to my practise.

I chose to focus my dissertation research on advertisement and how the advances in technology influenced advertisement strategies. My initial inspiration for this was post-modern digital advertisement which we experience today, I wanted to learn more about tracking methods and how the wide web could understand my online behaviour and recommend me products, it was a scary thought and made me question the privacy I actually had when online. From here I was curious as to how advertisement had got to this point in time and where consumeristic advertisement originated from. Advertisement linked to my practice as a graphic designer and I felt that by understanding the previous ways of marketing techniques would enable me to prepare for a future industry which interests me as a career choice.

Today, we are bombarded with advertisement from posters to pervasive ads on mobile games. We are great at ignoring them and I can properly speak for the majority when I say we wait for that all important ‘skip’ or ‘x’ button to appear. However, in a world were advertisement is becoming more difficult to create brand loyalty and appeal to consumers, how do subliminal messages affect our behaviour. I was super interested in the Industrial Revolution which influenced mass consumerism and the golden age, the creative revolution and ultimately the digital revolution centuries later.

Throughout third year I have learnt a huge amount from researching and generally being curious in the history of advertising and how agencies use rational or emotional techniques to create a desire for a given product or awareness campaign. I researched a range of theories relevant to advertising and culture and some made me think differently after realising method behind the ideologies. One example of this is Technological Determinism. This was a reductionist theoretical framework which presumed that a society’s technology controlled the development of its social structure and cultural values. Originally coined by Thorstein Veblen, I have focused on a revitalised edition by Karl Marx who looks at productive technologies relevant to my area of research. It argues that technological development determines social change from the way people interact with others and how they think. This is an inevitable course and suggests that technology is uncontrollable and will continue to dominate our lives for the foreseeable future. Rosalind Williams describes the process as ‘a three-word logical proposition: Technology determines history’. However I argue that Advertisement is an initial governing force to promoting such technologies which creates the demand.

From writing my thesis, I have researched into wacky and useful topics that would have gone unnoticed otherwise. I have learnt a great deal from consumerism in the early 19th century to how Propaganda was used to create nationalism and encourage prosperity at a time of economic recession. In some cases however, I lacked the ability to link methodology and theorists to my thesis of technological advancements and felt I went off-topic through exploration in irrelevant marketing. After writing a basic draft of each chapter I revisited these areas and spent my time refining them, making sure they were referring to my question and discussed relevant theories throughout technological progression.

My main issue was finding relevant books on advertising strategies which were influenced by technology, this was resolved by researching journals and books online and reading case studies for marketing campaigns throughout different eras and comparing these techniques and analysing what remained the same. Another example of this is the theory of Homo-Consumercus by Gad Saad. In this theory, Saad suggests that advertisers target the biological instincts of the consumer to create emotion connections to desire.

Dissertation Progress

I’ve really enjoyed researching further afield in psychology. I have recently spent a lot of time studying Jean Piaget’s theory of Cognitive Development in children, which is made up with a series of stages;

sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational and formal operational period

which the child goes through from birth to post-adolescence years and beyond. An interesting fact, the child’s game ‘peak a boo’ was a perfect exercise to help a child understand that an object continues to exist when they can’t see it, this phenomenon is known as object permanence and targets the first stage: Sensorimotor stage.

As the child ages and advances through each of these stages, egocentric traits remain which prevents them from being able to reason and form logical conclusions throughout the preoperational and concrete operational stages. In relation to my area of study, this was a perfect opportunity for advertisements to target a given age range in the younger generation, various attention-devices were used such as: singing, rhyming and dancing. These methods were based on ‘non-verbal cues and mental imagery’ (Smith, 1995).

As for my dissertation, I am finishing up my final chapter and conclusion. I hope to proof-read a few times and make necessary changes this weekend, ready to be printed and bound  on Wednesday.

Dissertation Progress

The last few days have been a real push to add theorists and methodology to each chapter and to reassure myself that they have remained relevant to my discussion on how the advances in technology have influenced how advertisement targets its consumers. I have taken time out to complete my 1,000 word PDP already which I feel has lifted a huge weight for the next 2 weeks.

For the next week I will be maturing my chapters and making sure I have referenced correctly and provided evidence of my arguments. I hope to print and submit my copy a few days before submission deadline to avoid the last-minute rush. I have extended my dissertation across 4 chapters, each more relevant to post-modern consumerism than the last. I have looked at the work of Frued, Piaget, Skinner, Gad Saad, Vygotsky and I feel most importantly – Karl Marx, a reductionist who suggests that society and history is determined by advances in technology.

Dissertation Progress

On the first day back of term I spent some time looking around the library for more relevant books on my thesis as I had slightly adapted my title and direction over the holiday. I wanted to find books which looked at how advertisement fuelled propaganda in the Victorian Era, the ideology and meanings in advertisements and how the industrial revolution helped the advertising boom of the 20th century. I feel it was worth doing and I now have a selection of books which are more relevant to my discussion in Chapters one and two. I have used online articles and journals as part of my secondary resources and feel these have been super helpful in learning about the progress of technology over the last 2 decades and how its journey has heavily influenced advertisement and strategies to targeting the consumer. I have a mentor meeting on Friday, and look forward to showing my progress and direction of the thesis and hope to get some final advice in regards to my conclusion and review.

An unusual break from dissertation

Ní haū, wō shî Ben.

你 花, 我 实 本

Today, I’ve spent my time learning basic mandarin and 12494562_10153284214979212_1774613294_ofeel like I now have a better understanding of tone alternations. The language itself is not as hard as I had expected – with no past tense vocabulary, gender or rearranged sentence structure. I have been writing out basic sentences in Pinyin form such as:

who I am, where I am from, what languages I can speak, my age, family members, pets and food.

I have used resources online and a book I bought for beginners which has been a real help and easy to follow. I thought it would be a great opportunity to learn some basic sentences before I go to China in August. This will be a great help when commuting and ordering food, and also entertaining the locals.

I will be posting my learning progress as I go along in the coming weeks and will eventually add a new menu tab for my China experience. This will be for me to keep a daily note of the culture, different activities I do and some internship-related work too!

“I guess this is my dissertation, …welcome to graduation” – Kanye et al (2007)

Over the xmas holidays I have got stuck in with my diss and feel I have made a vast improvement with my progress. I am hoping to complete a draft before my next mentor meeting. Doing this along side 30hrs work a week gives me the motivation to step up to the challenge.

I have had difficulties finding a range of books which are relevant or uphold enough information for me to explore regarding my topic of technology’s influence on advertisement. However! I have researched and researched around many different advancements in technology from the industrial revolution through to the current day from online pdf books, articles, newspapers and similar thesis which focus on brand advertisement.

I have really enjoyed researching the evolution of advertisement and how computer technology has played a huge factor in its development. Technology is advancing so quick today, most of the techniques used go by unnoticed. Ever wondered how adverts on one website relate to something you searched for on a shopping site, consumer activity is being increasingly tracked and sometimes even predicted based on other consumer habits. Exploring how these algorithms have advanced is something I have a big interest in.

I have had a lot of support from my work colleagues, family and friends regarding my dissertation and feel I have adequate time to complete it before the final deadline in February. I was curious to see what my predicted grade is currently – by using an online calculator. I estimated the credits for each of the projects and dissertation (being 3 main projects & a dissertation which excluded our final project & exhibition). To achieve a 1st I would need to get 75% or higher in my dissertation or earn those final few marks in each project to secure a top end mark. I am optimistic that our final few projects will also bring the percentage needed down, thus I will be aiming to get 60% in my dissertation.

The Big Idea: Initial Presentation and research

Perception – Ben

At the very start of this project, We had to chose our desired word which we would research and create our own direction and outcome based on what we discovered. I chose Perception and wanted to step away from distorted reality as this was seen everywhere. I looked at a range of different perceptions and found our perception of vision and strength compared to other living creatures very interesting. It was different and took a fresh approach to perception. It reminded me a lot of the David Attenborough documentaries. I thought it would be a fantastic opportunity to look at info graphs, visual animations and let me explore different ways of presenting information. My presentation is attached above and looks at the sensation, cognition and perception process of our thinking process and how we perceive information. This research was closely linked to Plato and Aristotle’s wok on vision and reason. My initial researched looked at the literal associated reasons behind perception of the human body and the senses we have.

‘Of all the senses, trust only the sense of sight’

Plato and Aristotle closely associated vision and reason.

I was inspired by this quote I came across during my research and it has a lot of sense behind it. Many of us may experience similar situations such as rain, watching the same program or a car ride but each persons individual account is very unique. This is because our genes and our jeans. To explain, we are all born with very similar yet very different genes which affect our perception of our individual senses from sight to smell to touch. One may see the colour green as blue and another could see that same colour as red but from birth we associate a seen colour as what we are brought up to know by its given name. And by jeans, I mean metaphorically for our experiences and choices we have previously made to get to that given point in time. Our emotions and experience of a situation can change the way we perceive an event, this can be from an emotional connection to a song, the memories of a specific smell as we make connection to past events.

A personal account of this is the drink, Fanta fruit twist. I have a strong memories of accidentally getting it into my eyes when I was very little and the smell has stayed with me, during the event I dropped the bottle in the process which rolled off a bridge onto a garden below. Many years later and that garden was taken over by the council and renovated into a modern cafe known as ‘The Mill’. Which I went on to work for many years later. Small encounters like this can have strong connections to events and locations.

I think it is really interesting to explore the psychology of perception and how we perceive things in connections to past experiences.
