Constellation Group Discussion

To start this task we first discussed what our personal views were to the question. We then collaboratively came up with this statement to sum up what we believe. We think technology has made humans more dependant and semi-incompetent as we no longer hold the traditional skills which we would have learnt if machinery wasn’t created, on the other hand, technology has pushed human exploration to lead to scientific discoveries such as artificial lighting and medicine. We, as a species, no longer use technology as a survival tool but instead as a comfort tool.

The human race have developed and changed over time almost in direct correlation to the growth and development of technology. As a race, we began to creatively think at an early stage, this was linked to our survival through hunting and food preparation. This brought fire, basic stone tools and weapons to defend against predators. As we expanded and explored we developed music, transportation and made links between the stars above for navigation. The search for materials resulted in the discovery of metal such as bronze and iron. Metal greatly improved the durability of tools and weapons allowing humans to further their exploration. The lifestyle at this time was exciting and primarily focused on survival and exploration as far as we know.

In response to what humans will become from technological transformation, I feel humans have already transformed into a more dependent and semi-incompetent species as we no longer hold the traditional skills which we would have learnt if machinery wasn’t created. Although I am unsure if this is all bad. Today, the world is a very different place. Human exploration has lead to scientific discoveries such as artificial lighting and medicine, not to mention space exploration and atomic manipulation. However, I feel we no longer focus on technological discoveries for survival but for entertainment and improvements to our lifestyle instead. My experience of growing up alongside personal computers has effected the way I learn and react to everyday experiences, the days of going to the library for information has long gone as we can find results and information at the palm of our hands instantly as a result of mobile devices.

This could be seen as the result of the industrial revolution, a period where materials were exhausted and mass production in food and equipment began. This also marked the end of traditional agriculture, value and warped civilisation as we know it. I strongly feel that we are becoming more vulnerable to modern technology as almost all of us that have the chance, store food in fridges or expect computers to hold masses of information securely. A recent survey from BBC showed that there was lack of trust in the internet, nonetheless we still use it despite its risks.

Thinking At The Edge W3

key idea: we face the question of good in art in design, is it subjective in the view or objective in the work. subjective in term of its appearance or objective in terms of its function, can relate to reality.

Sassure: the meanings we have, texture/experience comes from language, comes from the structure of marks and sounds we see/hear. the experiences we have are personal to us based on our past experience.

not a *single person can create a language as they can’t shape it on correctness.

horizon, run through a park, focus on 1 person. Some rule applied when you follow a passing of a box and someone runs on in a gorilla suit, you wont see them.

modernism/ post modernism

Someone who can rise above God, can manipulate the world, construct. To rise above nature, to become their own creator – modernity, a relationship with technology, a desire to try and find forms that cannot be created, to rise above technology. Impressionism, to do something that technology can’t reproduce. such as a camera can’t paint light, and so humans can manipulate light.

structuralism / post structuralism

20th century, the linguistic century. Meaning is self contained, meaning happens across the web.

Largely french, philosophical theory

deconstruction

destruction + construction, the human self is not the foundation of concepts. an attempt to see how certain concepts affect our thoughts. private/public, mind/body. take apart the way we think.

there is no safe haven, only more concepts. No true vantage points.

we are trying too see the ground we are standing on.

TEXT: conveying smell and texture with words associated with the experience, important for modern arts is the idea the senses are more than the channels on the world. This is an asynthetic text made up of asyndetic listing to emphasis and heighten the given senses which are a result of the experience they have had.

Because of the technological changes, its about the designer working with the user, not only what is, but what aught to be.

subject and object, or subject and world are not the most fundamental units of experience. concepts are, these have meaning not in isolation but as parts of a communal differential, transformation web

THINKING AT THE EDGE (Clive Cazeaux)

This picture sums up our lecture

Today was the first day of my chosen option. I chose this option as I felt it connected to me most. I am interested in questioning the everyday life of objects and how they are changing our behaviour and what will be the outcome of this if we continue. After our introduction to the course we had a small group discussion on how language and materials define us. We decided that language defines where we originate from or where we are situated now, it helps us portray the character we wish to present such as friendly or aggressive but at the same time it can also be used to persuade or discourage others. The language we choose to use defines others perspective of us beyond our control, but nonetheless it is the base line connection between humans. We moved onto material where we felt that social restraints affect the material we possess, such as jewellery or construction material based on the economy.

The next discussion we had was whether of not medicines and other forms of modern technology are turning us into cyborgs. This was challenging as to what defines us as human or a cyborg as today we depend on technology from our cars to get from A-B or our kitchen equipment for food. Although building complex structures and problem solving is within our human nature. After much discussion there were questions whether humans surround themselves with technology as an escape from mortality.

In my opinion, Humans have been recorded from the start of time to use some form of technology- from fire to sticks as weapons, and as time has moved on so has the complexity of technology. However, todays technology has in my view gone past the threshold of human technology. This is because we have entered the micro-tech world, static materials which can hold information can be manipulated whenever we feel. This technology cannot be made by human interaction but from the computers and technology we have previously made. Instead of a network of mechanics, pilots and train drivers etc, any of these COULD be controlled by computers and artificial intelligence instead of humans, pushing the humans away from our own engineering network. A time not so long ago we could open a piece of technological equipment and see its working components and understand its ability to process, but now most equipment is controlled by chips and motherboards that appear to be smaller than ever. These are the alienated technological equipment intercepting the way we make new technology.

Also at a time of modern technology, we rely on this fairly new equipment to hold our personal and private information such as bank details, stock markets and international exchanges but also on the uprise is online fraud and hackers who are mostly botnet viruses who’s control is beyond their creator. We do not know the long term effect of wifi or electronic signals to the human body yet we continue to build more and more technology which is dependant on this. Today even modern fridges have the ability to connect to wifi and keep a record of what you have kept in your fridge which relates back to the topic of whether humans use technology or if technology uses us.
